On February 24, the social network Facebook (Meta) restricted the accounts of four Russian media outlets: the Zvezda TV channel, the RIA Novosti news agency, and the online publications Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru.
Roskomnadzor demanded that Meta remove the restrictions and explain them, but the company ignored the appeal. In response, the department, in accordance with the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office, slows down Facebook traffic in Russia. In addition, on February 26, he banned state-owned Russian media from running ads and monetizing content on the social network.
Western sanctions followed in response to the Russian-led operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The Russian side emphasized that it does not hatch plans for the occupation of Ukraine, and strikes are carried out only on the military infrastructure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. In the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons, was reported. The republics announced general mobilization, the evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia, and also asked to recognize their independence. After that, on February 21, the President of the Russian Federation signed decrees recognizing the sovereignty of the DPR and LPR.
