Yaser Asprilla is one of the most promising players in Colombian football. At just 20 years old, he has already spent two seasons in Europe and Néstor Lorenzo already has him in the Colombian senior team.
According to the criteria of
Asprilla, who came up through the lower divisions of Envigado, has already played six games with the senior national team, in which he has scored two goals, and was part of the squad that finished runner-up in the recent Copa América won by Argentina.
Stade Rennes, Yaser Asprilla’s new club
Now, the native of Bajo Baudó (Chocó) is ready for a new experience in Europe. He arrived in France on Thursday to sign with Stade Rennes, a team in the country’s first division.
Rennes finished 10th in Ligue 1 in the 2023-24 season with 56 points, 30 behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. Their biggest achievement was winning the Coupe de France in 2019, beating PSG in the final.
Asprilla leaves Watford for 25 million euros, although the English club retains part of his sporting rights in case of a future transfer to another team.
In his two seasons with Watford, both in England’s second division, Asprilla played 86 games, counting all official matches, in which he scored seven goals and provided 10 assists.
He will be the third Colombian to wear the Stade Rennes shirt. The first was Victor Hugo Montano, who scored 22 goals in 87 games between 2010 and 2013.
The second was Juan Fernando Quintero, who had a fleeting stint: just one season, 2015-16, in which he barely played 14 games, with one goal and two assists.
