During an interview with IGN, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, said that Xbox has never had so many users on consoles, and the hope is clearly that yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase will increase them further, thanks to the extraordinary quality and quantity of the projects presented during the event.
“Right now we have more Xbox users on consoles than there have ever been in the history of this platform,” Spencer explained. “That’s because of the impact of Game Pass and it’s something that I pay a lot of attention to because I love this service, but I also want people to be able to buy games.”
“For this reason I also looked at what happened to the sales of our third party titles, and it is possible to appreciate it there double-digit growth every year for the last five years on Xbox consoles.”
A reiterated message
The decision to bring DOOM: The Dark Ages also to PS5 represents a way to reiterate a message that Spencer has already expressed on multiple occasions: “When everyone plays, we all win.”
“How can we create a place where everyone can play video games? We’ve made a lot of progress on PC, for example, and now this platform It represents a huge resource for us. We’re thrilled to have so many PC users, more than we’ve ever had.”
“If you try to look at this industry through the lens of tradition, of ‘who sold the most consoles’ as the only solution to improve the world of gaming, I would say that Xbox is trying to do something different.”
“I get a lot of questions about what it means to be an Xbox owner and I think the Showcase provided some very clear answers. You could see an amazing series of games coming to Xboxavailable on Game Pass from day one, and by purchasing one of our consoles today you can also play the same games on PC thanks to the cross-platform features.”
“We’re focused on the next hardware with compatibility in mind, and our commitment to Xbox users is that you will have the opportunity to buy a console or a subscription, but also to see other games on other platforms: We think it represents an advantage for the franchises we are creating, and we see it from the players.”
