The social networking startup Bluesky is experiencing explosive growth thanks to the closure of X in Brazil, with over 2 million new users registered in the last four days. This rapid growth has led Bluesky to become the number one app in the country, even surpassing competitors such as Instagram Threads.
Unstoppable growth
According to the analytics firm App figuresBluesky’s total downloads increased by 10.584% over the weekend compared to the previous week. In Brazil alone, downloads grew by an incredible 1.018.952%. Not only that: even outside of Brazil, the app has seen significant growth, with an increase in 584% in downloads in 22 countries where it had previously seen little movement. Countries with the most installs included the United States, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Canada and Spain, while the greatest growth was recorded in Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Romania.
With this influx of new users, Bluesky has also seen a dramatic increase in engagement on the platform. The number of “likes” has risen to 104.6 million in just four days, up from 13 million the previous week. Follows and reposts also grew rapidly, from 1.4 million to 1.7 million respectively. 100.8 million and from 1.3 million to 11 million.
Why is Bluesky winning?
One of the main reasons for its success is its similarity to Xformerly known as Twitter, which was banned in Brazil due to political controversy. Many Brazilian users may have opted for Bluesky precisely because of its approach decentralizedwhich offers more freedom than centralized networks like X, where moderation decisions are in the hands of the platform owners.
The new social, unlike Threadspositions itself as a social network that does not shy away from political content and open discussions. This makes it particularly attractive to those looking for an alternative to X that maintains the typical dynamism of Twitter. Furthermore, the culture of Blueskyrich in memes and with a chaotic energy, it is very reminiscent of the early era of Twitter.
With more than 2.6 million users registered to date, and the85% Hailing from Brazil, Bluesky is quickly gaining traction among users looking for a freer, more decentralized social network. While platforms like Mastodon have seen more modest growth, the social network’s success appears to be due not only to decentralization, but also to the familiarity of the user experience compared to X.
With X blocked in Brazil and Bluesky growing exponentially, it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue, especially as Bluesky launches new features like video support.
The situation remains fluid, but for now, Bluesky seems to be the main alternative for those who leave X.
