The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is now in the archive, but among the arguments that still hold its own there is the sensational result of Lewis Hamilton, finished 13th at the finish line after numerous failed attempts in being able to overtake Pierre Gasly, which lasted more than half the race. In all this, Mercedes was still able to console itself with the 4th place of George Russell, who appeared much more aggressive than a dead seven-time world champion.
From a consoling point of view, there was no lack of closeness and support from the team to their number 44, starting with the team principal Toto Wolff; the latter, after the checkered flag, opened a direct radio team with the 37-year-old, apologizing publicly to him for providing him with a car “Undriveable”. This is a message that has not convinced many fans and former drivers, starting with an old Mercedes glory such as Nico Rosberg2016 world champion who criticized Wolff for not telling the truth in those statements.
Also following these statements, the Austrian manager wanted to respond indirectly to Hamilton’s former teammate, protecting the latter from the general criticisms of his performance: “When there is a train of cars with the DRS open for everyone, as happened in the Sprint, none of them have managed to overtake – explained Wolff to the media – when you find yourself ‘bottled up’ in similar circumstances, it is almost impossible to overcome. I really think Lewis had a lot more pace than Gasly, Albon or any of the other guys ahead of him, but there was only one DRS zone on the straight, and if you don’t have the speed in a straight line, you can’t pass. In any case, I think both drivers are doing their best at the moment. George had a great race, handling a car that wasn’t set up correctly after a perfect start, while Lewis just got stuck back there ”.
Finally, with regard to Russell’s performance, Wolff reserved other compliments to the young English driver, dwelling in more detail on the problems encountered during the race, which however did not prevent the former Williams from completing the GP at the foot of the podium: “We made a mistake in the flap adjustment during the pit stop – he added – not setting the wing correctly for the second stint. However, he still managed the understeer brilliantly, overcoming the difficulties of the car ”. A performance, that of Russell, also remarked by the track engineer: “I don’t know how you did it”.
