D.he German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) recommends that its team use mobile phones that have been made available for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The “My2022” app, which the organizers must set up, should be installed on these, and not on private phones. In this form, every participant arriving for the games that begin in the Chinese capital on February 4th must provide medical data such as the result of their PCR tests for the corona virus before departure and the result of a daily fever measurement.
The DOSB refrains from explaining the recommendation that the British and Dutch gave their Olympic travelers. There, explicit reference is made to the danger of digital espionage by the Chinese regime. The British Olympic Association recommends British Olympic participants not to take their private phones to China.
Cell phones are then scrapped
The Nederlands Olympisch Comité*Nederlandse Sport Federatie has also instructed its athletes not to take private devices such as mobile phones and laptops to China, as the newspaper “De Volkskrant” initially reported on Tuesday. The devices that are made available to the Dutch athletes are to be destroyed after their return. The Dutch NOK expressly referred to the danger of digital espionage by China’s security agencies.
The German athletes, it is said, should be allowed to keep their devices available for the games. Various journalist organizations and human rights organizations have also been pointing out the danger of digital and analogue surveillance for months.
A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee declined to comment on the Dutch warning at a technical briefing for journalists on Wednesday. Christian Mihr, the managing director of Reporters Without Borders Germany, had warned at the end of November “of surveillance and possible pressure” on journalists reporting on the games from the hosts and recommended not to download any applications. Mihr had asked the DOSB to “publicly and clearly demand compliance with freedom of the press and human rights”.
