Sony Interactive Entertainment’s May State of Play opened with the first real presentation of I agree, Firewalk’s sci-fi-themed 5v5 first-person shooter, scheduled for PS5 and PC with a release date set for August 23rd. We’ve seen a lot of the game, but we don’t know if it will be a game yet free or paid.
The first clues, however, allow us to have an idea of the type of economic model on which Concord will focus.
The clues about Concord
First of all, we know that it will be possible to do the reservation of some edition of Concord starting June 6th. This will include the Early Access beta (for 5 players) and the Monarch Pack, which appears to be a bundle of cosmetic content. Obviously pre-order is a first big clue to the fact that it will be a paid game, but we know well by now that even free to play games have special paid versions to get additional content right from launch.
More important is a second clue: it will be necessary PS Plus subscription to be able to play Concord. Subscription service is generally not required for free to play products such as Fortnite. This factor helps to believe that it will be a paid game.
However, there are other factors to take into consideration, such as price. Helldivers 2 was Sony’s great live service success at the beginning of 2024 and was sold for €39.99. Concord could try to position itself in the same price range to attract as many players as possible from launch and more easily generate word of mouth, so as to guarantee long-term profits, especially if Concord focuses on monetization through battle passes and lots of paid aesthetic content. It is also true that Concord appears to be a more expensive product, in production terms, so it is possible that Sony needs to position it at a higher starting price.
Furthermore, there is also another possibility, although it seems very unlikely to us: similarly to Foamstar, Concord could arrive directly on PS Plus, if not in Essential at least in Extra where it would be accessible for a limited period. We would bet otherwise, but it’s still within the realm of (remote) possibilities.
We leave you with the presentation of Concord’s State of Play.
