This May 8th we celebrate Mother’s Day. Unique and irreplaceable, many people are lucky enough to have a mother figure by their side. However, as not everything in life is ideal, the films of Disney they have done the same by variously depicting the chemistry between parent and offspring, even if that means not portraying them at all. The truth behind the mystery
In an interview with Glamor magazine, Don Hahn, the brilliant mind behind iconic Disney films, explained the reason why most heroes and heroines do not have a mother.
“One reason is practical because movies are 80 or 90 minutes long, and Disney movies are about growing up. They are about that day in your life when you have to accept responsibility. (…) In a nutshell, it’s much faster to grow characters when you get rid of their parents”, began the legendary producer.

On the other hand, he offered another heartbreaking reason: death of walt disney’s mother. This fact would have marked to the point that -as a narrative outlet to the brand’s stories- they chose to reflect in some way the pain of the studio’s founder.
“He never talked about that time because he felt personally responsible. (…) He was really tormented by it. That idea that he actually contributed to his mother’s death was really tragic,” Hanhn detailed.
However, these would not be the only reasons for the absence of maternal figures. According to Marie Claire magazine, Disney films used to be inspired by various tales written by the Brothers Grimm. In that sense, it is believed that novelists did not include mother characters because many women died during childbirth during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
