Covid-19 kills many more men than women. Despite two years of research on the virus, it is still unclear why. A new study from Harvard University’s GenderSci Lab, a research lab dedicated to generating feminist concepts, methods and theories for scientific research on sex and gender, suggests a reason and it has less to do with biological differences between the sexes and more with a range of social and behavioral factors.

The analysis, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, showed that although the highest mortality rates are among men, they are more related to times of outbreaks, state health policies, health behaviors associated with gender, race, level of income and occupation.
“The result of the study shows that gender differences in Covid-19 outcomes are not stable across locations or consistent over time, but rather are context sensitive,” explains Sarah Richardson, Founder and Director of the GenderSci Lab. .
During the survey, the researchers found that in some states men were being infected and dying more than women, while in other states the numbers were reversed or even.
Scientists also reported that death rates in the United States between men and women were separated by a smaller difference than previously thought. At the beginning of the pandemic, twice as many men were believed to be dying of Covid-19. Since then, some researchers have begun to attribute these higher rates to factors related to biological sex, such as specific hormones or the immune response.
