Nutritionist Karine Hoenderdos explains the situation with painful kiwis: ,,It has to do with the kiwi and with yourself. What you feel is the ‘oral allergy syndrome’ (OAS). This is a tingling or itching in the mouth during or immediately after eating fruit and/or nuts. For you it’s kiwi, for others it’s apple, pear or hazelnut.”
OAS is common, especially in older children and adults, Hoenderdos said. “Usually this involves a cross-allergy, which means that OAS is associated with, for example, hay fever. The symptoms are harmless and they disappear on their own. So you can just keep eating kiwis.”
It is not necessary to go to the GP, says Hoenderdos. Incidentally, OAS complaints can often be prevented by heating. Apple pie, for example, does not cause any complaints.”
