A high school teacher and one of his former students, who is now studying engineering at the University of the Basque Country, have launched a web application to help residents of the Valencian towns most affected by DANA to locate the whereabouts of their vehicles. , carried away by strong floods and in many cases, turned into masses of iron or embedded in bridges, tunnels and facades.
The website, tucochedana.es, began operating last Saturday and the starting mechanism is simple: a database to which volunteers and other citizens can upload information about the cars and motorcycles they find on the streets (license plate, model, brand and color, location and even photographs of its condition) and a search window so that by entering the numbering of the plates, the owners can find it.
It has shortcomings, of course, “we update almost every hour,” explains to ABC Juanfran Soler Castaño, a high school teacher at the IES Alyanub, in the town of Vera, Almeria, who has created the application altruistically and assuming the costs of keeping it online. . He explains that there are already more than 560 registered vehicles and many citizens who have contacted them when they cannot find their license plates in the base.
Hence, the next leap, with the help of an engineer from Valencia who has offered to do it, is to implement a system that allows the user to register their vehicle and receive an alert if a volunteer registers it on the web. «It is a improvement that we want to integrate today», explains Soler, to make it easier for owners to go see their car before any of the volunteer tractors or heavy Army machinery remove it from the road and lose it again.
The objective is not so much the vehicle itself, but rather the personal effects it may contain “or even the papers, for insurance reasons and everything.” “If at the moment it is located, the notice goes off and you go to the place, there is a high percentage of possibility of finding it,” he points out. “In the end, it’s about being of help in whatever way it is,” he says.
