In October this year, the first round of the 2024 municipal elections will take place. More than 150 million Brazilian citizens will go to the polls to choose mayors, vice-mayors and councilors for the country's 5,568 municipalities.
The elections are scheduled for October 6th. For cities with more than 200 thousand voters in which the candidate with the most votes for Municipal Executive has not reached 50% of the valid votes plus one, the second round will be on October 27th, the last Sunday of the month.
In addition to the voting dates, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) published the electoral calendar that must be observed by voters and candidates.
Regularization and issuance of electoral titles
Those who have pending issues regarding electoral registration have until May 8th to resolve them with the Electoral Court.
Young people who are going to vote for the first time and need to register to vote, which is a necessary condition for participating in the election, must respect this deadline, as well as those who need to update their information on the electoral register, for example, changing their address. or changing the voting location.
There is the possibility of regularizing pending issues online, on the pages of the Regional Electoral Courts (TRE).
Voting is mandatory for anyone over 18 years of age. And it is optional for those between 16 and 18 years old or over 70 years old, and for illiterate people.
Registration of applications
By August 15th, the Electoral Court will receive the names of the candidates for this year's municipal elections. In elections of this type, the parties register with the electoral courts of first instance.
To become a candidate, people must meet certain requirements. Namely: Brazilian nationality, literacy, full exercise of political rights, voter registration, electoral domicile in the municipality in which you intend to run for at least six months before the election and party affiliation. Everyone must be over 18 years old. For those wishing to run for mayor, the minimum age is 21 years old.
Election propaganda
Advertising in which the candidate explicitly asks for votes can only be made from August 16th, when the deadline for registering candidacies will be over. The objective of this date is for campaigns to begin on an equal footing. Before this day, any request to vote may be considered irregular and the candidate may be fined.
Free electoral advertising on radio and TV begins on August 30th and continues until October 3rd. On the radio, the broadcast will be from 7 am to 7:10 am and from 12 pm to 12:10 pm. On TV, it will be shown from 1 pm to 1:10 pm and from 8:30 pm to 8:40 pm. In these vehicles, free voting hours will take place from Monday to Saturday.
What does a mayor do?
Among the main functions of a mayor are: ensuring the good administration of the municipality, controlling public financial resources, planning and carrying out works.
Furthermore, the head of the municipal Executive must sanction the laws approved by the Chamber of Councilors, and also veto or improve these proposals when necessary.
What does a councilor do?
The councilor is responsible for supervising City Hall’s projects, programs and actions. Mainly, with regard to compliance with the law and good management of public money. Furthermore, he proposes and deliberates on municipal legislation.
