At what time should you get deodorant? To maximize its effectiveness, is it better to apply it in the morning or at night? According to an article of the Washington Postwhich collects the opinion of an expert in dermatology on this subject, the answer to this question depends on the type of product we are referring to. Here is everything you need to know.
Antitranspirants and deodorants, differences
Let’s start by saying that sweating is a physiological mechanism that is activated when it is necessary to lower body temperature after it has increased, due to heat or exercise, for example. That said, excessive or profuse sweating can cause the appearance of unpleasant odors. This is related to the fact that perspiration is degraded by bacteria present in our skin, with the production of volatile substances that have a characteristic smell.
That is why there are deodorants and anti -transpirants. Although not many people know, these are two different products: the first are designed simply to cover unpleasant odors with a certain fragrance; The latter act, on the other hand, as a kind of “plug” that reduces sweat exit and partially contributes to its reabsorption. It should be added that several products that we commonly call deodorants are designed to act on both fronts. According to a study conducted in 2015 by researchers from the Dermatological Clinic of the University of Catania, about half of the 3,000 subjects who answered a questionnaire on this subject did not know the difference between deodorant and antitranspirant.
When to use deodorant and when antitranspirant
Made this distinction, Adam Friedman, Professor of Dermatology at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, USA, defends that it is more appropriate to apply anti -transpirants at night, before bedtime. This is due, according to the expert in the article of the Washington Postthat we tend to sweat more during the day than at night, and it is likely that sweat dilutes active substances (normally compounds of aluminum) of the antitranspirant, reducing its effectiveness. In addition, this gives the product to act and should guarantee a lower sweating during the next day.
The experts of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) agree with this recommendation and also suggest applying the antitranspirant at night. In case of using two different products, they recommend applying the deodorant in the morning.
Other small tips
Another trick that can be useful especially when it is very hot, recommends the AAD, is to wear sufficiently breathable clothes. Cotton is usually considered a good option. In addition, certain stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine can increase sweating, so reducing the consumption of coffee, tea and other drinks or foods that contain them could help, especially when temperatures abroad are very high.
