With the purchase of Activision Blizzard On the part of Microsoft, multiple games from this company are expected to be available on Xbox Game Pass. However, if this acquisition is not completed, it has been revealed that Activision has no plans to bring its titles to similar subscription services.
according to a new document by Microsoft submitted to the UK Competition and Markets Authority, CMA, if the purchase is not completed, Activision has no plans to bring its games to other subscription platforms, not even PlayStation Plus. This was what was discussed:
“Activision has never released any new content on multi-game subscription services and has no intention of doing so in the future…
…Without Fusion, Activision content would not be available on multi-game subscription services. Therefore, the merger cannot worsen the conditions of competition.
Activision does not make its games (including Call of Duty) available to any multi-game subscription service, nor is there any evidence that this may change in the foreseeable future.
Activision’s internal ordinary course business documents, as well as sworn testimony from its executives, have made it clear that there are no plans to do so in the future in the absence of the merger. Activision is concerned that participation in subscription services could affect their (REDACTED) and would lead to brand dilution and cannibalization of buy-to-play sales (especially of new releases). This reflects Activision’s view that even if the subscription business model were to grow, (REDACTED). This has been a major impediment for publishers to agree to place their content on subscription services, a stance that will not change in the future.”
These new statements reveal several interesting details. For starters, this makes it clear that, like PlayStation, Activision doesn’t see day-one launches viable on subscription services, as they would lose huge profits. Only in its first week on the market, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II generated more than a billion dollars.
On the other hand, this also clarifies previous rumors that the company intended to create its own subscription service, like Ubisoft. Finally, these statements make it clear, once again, that only Microsoft can afford to release day one games on Game Passas other companies would lose money doing this.
On related topics, Microsoft blocked PlayStation Plus from coming to Xbox. Similarly, Microsoft wants PlayStation Plus to have day one releases.
Editor’s Note:
This is one of the biggest revelations. As you will remember, Phil Spencer assured that multiple Activision Blizzard series will reach Xbox Game Pass, and this purchase does not materialize, this means that we will never see several of these franchises on similar services.
