“Until we meet again” generated many expectations among Peruvians for being the first original national production of Netflix. However, after its premiere, the film had several criticisms from the public, due to its plot and other elements present.
Likewise, the film caused controversy again after being accused by some Twitter users of falling into the practice of brown face in a particular scene. Below, we explain what happened and what the term means.

What is brownface?
As explained from the website of the Ministry of Culture of Peru, the term brownface refers to “the physical and cultural characteristics associated with certain ethnic groups (skin color, clothing or way of speaking)”.
However, far from doing it for a purely artistic purpose, since many were troubadours or actors, the main reason was to cause ridicule and thus amuse white spectators.
“By distorting the characteristics and culture of black Americans, including their appearance, language, dance, behavior, and character, white Americans were able to codify whiteness across class and geopolitical lines as its antithesis,” says the National Museum Smithsonian’s Africa Story (via CNN).

Why do they accuse of applying the brownface in “Until we meet again”?
In a scene on the beach, Stephanie Cayo is found, in her role as Adriana, along with other characters from the film and Carlos Carlín (Mauricio), who appears totally tanned and with wavy hair.
Faced with this situation, some Twitter users did not hesitate to describe this action as brownface. A particular case indicates that in the tape “We see a black and curly Carlín”.
Given the above, other netizens did not hesitate to agree on the inappropriate use of this type of representation in the middle of 2022, when there was the option that another Afro-descendant person be present on the scene and not necessarily characterize Carlín.
However, other users did not share the opinion and pointed out that, because they were on the beach, the actor’s excessive tan and fluffy hair was natural.
