‘Fetish actors’ abound in the industry and you know many of them, but you may not have noticed that there is a pattern to the productions they star in.
In case you haven’t noticed, there are different artists in Hollywood who have gained huge notoriety in the medium after working with a particular director. Therefore, they sought to replicate the winning formula in subsequent projects and, without realizing it, created a pattern. This is how what many know as ‘fetish actors’ originate. What is it about and what cases can we take as an example? In the following lines we tell you more details.

What are ‘fetish actors’?
Surely you have noticed that certain artists in the film industry often collaborate on several occasions with a particular director. These figures are known as ‘fetish actors’, since the filmmaker chooses them repeatedly, either out of a feeling of empathy, similar tastes, admiration or mere friendship ties.
To cite some examples, we have the following:
- Tim Burton and Johnny Depp: 9 movies
- Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell: 15 movies
- Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson: 7 movies
- Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio: 5 movies
- Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. 5 movies

As you can see, it is not a coincidence to see the same director having a specific actor as part of his production. If good chemistry can ensure success and even some awards, it’s no coincidence to see Penélope Cruz in more than a handful of Pedro Almodóvar’s tapes, just to cite one more case.
What ‘fetish actors’ can we recognize on Peruvian TV?
Just like in Hollywood, although without as much variety, Peruvian TV also has some ‘fetish actors’. If we go to the movies, we have the famous director Francisco Lombardi, who has collaborated on various occasions with Gustavo Bueno in films such as “Black Butterfly”, “Red Ink”, “Pantaleon and the Visitors”, “The City and the Dogs”, “La boca del lobo”, “Caídos del cielo”, “Ojos que no ven”, and will do it again this 2023 with the premiere of “Amelia’s decision”.
In the case of TV, we can see the best example in Michelle Alexander’s miniseries and soap operas. Although the production company usually relies on new talent and show business figures for its fictions, we can recognize that personalities such as André Silva, Christian Domínguez and Nicolás Galindo are present in several of them.
