The Endurance World Championship is heading towards the decisive race of the season, seven days after the last weekend of the 6 hours in Bahrain, which is not without controversy. The race in the GTE-Pro class saw the Porsches triumph with a solid one-two, after having distanced the two Ferraris that had never really been fighting. Antonello Coletta, director of Ferrari sports activities, then expressed his resentment against the Balance of Performance defined for the Asian trip, which was particularly penalizing for the Maranello cars.
In view of the second race on the Bahrain track, the FIA and ACO have therefore revised the parameters of the BoP in the GT classes, intervening exclusively on the Ferraris and leaving the values for Porsche and Aston Martin unchanged. In GTE-Pro it was raised the turbocharging curve of the turbocharger compared to the last 6 hours, which is now slightly higher than that in force at Le Mans, but lower than what was defined in the BoP for the Monza race.
The head Sportscar365 reports that the boost in turbo pressure should be about 12 extra horsepower, according to the data supplied to them directly by Ferrari over the course of the season. The greater power will also inevitably lead to an increase in consumption, which is why the maximum amount of fuel that the Reds can carry at each stint has been increased by 2 liters, from 89 to 91 liters.
The balance of the Balance of Performance will be crucial to allow a fair challenge on the track, valid for the assignment of both world titles. In fact, in the drivers’ standings the Ferrari duo made up of Calado-Pier Guidi leads with 139 points, with only one length ahead of the Porsche Estre-Jani standard bearers. Among the manufacturers, on the other hand, the Maranello house is chasing just one point behind, with 230 points in the standings against Porsche’s 231 points.
Similarly to the GTE-Pro class, Ferraris will benefit from an extra boost from Balance of Performance corrections even in the GTE-Am class. The turbo boost curve was in fact raised compared to the 6 hours in Bahrain, without however returning to the levels in force at Monza. Also in this case, the Reds will be able to carry 2 liters of fuel more at each stint.
After the dispute of the 6 hours of Bahrain, in GTE-Am the table of the Success Ballast, the mechanism for allocating ballast based on the results of the last two races and the position in the championship. Compared to the previous race, the Ferrari # 47 of Cetilar Racing will enjoy a reduced minimum weight of 20 kg, while the Aston Martin # 33 of the TF Sport will have an additional weight of 15 kg. The TF Sport crew is fighting for the drivers’ title, but will have to recover 22.5 points behind the leaders in the AF Corse standings with the # 83 Ferrari, with 39 points still to be awarded.
