Ferrari did not like the changes to the Balance of Performance that the FIA World Endurance Championship has adopted for the races to be held in Bahrain, at the end of the 2021 season.
This weekend the 6 Hours will be held in Sakhir, while the next we will have the 8 Hours, but the 488 who are engaged in LMGTE Pro and Am will be forced to run in a real defense of the lead in the standings.
The automatic calculation system used by FIA and ACO based on the two previous events (Portimao and Monza) and not applied for the 24h of Le Mans, sees the Prancing Horse cars on the track at 1255kg in weight, just as they were at 6h Brianza.
Compared to this race, however, four liters of fuel less will be allowed at each stint (89 liters in the tank instead of 93) and a lower boost from the turbo, calculated around the total missing 25 HP.
All the drivers went the wrong way, also because the Porsches did not have any changes to their parameters, so protests were not long in coming.
“I like to win and lose racing on the track, but this decision, while legitimate, seems very questionable to me,” says Alessandro Pier Guidi, AF Corse driver in LMGTE Pro, who shares the wheel of the # 51 Ferrari with James Calado.
“We are not in a position to fight to defend our leadership and it doesn’t seem very sporty to me.”
Having said that, it will be necessary to roll up our sleeves and understand what strategy to adopt, also because the Sakhir circuit has rather fast sections, but it must also be said that the leaders of the FIA WEC have not ruled out possible changes between the two scheduled races.
“We are not people who give up, so we will give everything to try to win the titles”, concludes Pier Guidi, well aware that we will have to get into the cockpit with very narrow teeth.
