There are more than four months left until the green light for WEC 2023 in Sebring, but behind the scenes the challenge has already begun. In fact, the tests of the manufacturers close to landing in the World Championship follow one another, who will be able to modify their respective cars until they are approved by the Federation. It is therefore essential to exploit every single test kilometer to accumulate information, understand the behavior of the cars and the assets designed to extract their maximum potential, as well as obviously to encounter every single reliability problem that could emerge in a 24-hour marathon.
In the week leading up to the official presentation of Imola, Ferrari carried out home tests in Monza. The Cavallino brought two Hypercars to Brianza, inside which sat Alessandro Pier Guidi and Nicklas Nielsen, two of the most prominent standard bearers in Maranello’s GT programs. The new 296 GT3 was also on the track at the Autodrome, accompanied by its ancestor, the 488 GT3, probably to carry out comparative aerodynamics and set-up tests.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Porsche, one of the many rivals that Ferrari will meet in the WEC, cannot stand idle. After taking part in the collective tests of Daytona and Road Atlanta together with the other manufacturers registered in the IMSA GTP class, namely Cadillac, BMW and Acura, the team from Zuffenhausen moved to Sebring to subject the 963 to its most severe test. . On the historic Florida track, the German LMDh completed a test of 36 hours continuouslyequivalent to 1218 rpm for 7331 kilometers, to which are added another 600 kilometers of tuning.
A grueling test that carried out by Porsche, not only for the duration. Due to the violent bumps in the road it is customary to say that a 12-hour of Sebring is equivalent to a 24-hour of Le Mans in terms of mechanical stress, but the 963 has completed three laps of the clock. The most successful house in Le Mans history has now amassed 24500 kilometers with its prototype, a mileage that instills confidence in view of the debut in January at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the opening leg of the IMSA championship.
