Strong storms and a series of thunderstorms are announced for Pentecost. However, the weather conditions do not develop in the same way everywhere in Germany.
Munich – A long weekend is just around the corner and that has been the case since June 1st 9 euro ticket: Many day trippers take this as an opportunity to pack their backpacks and head out into nature. In the coming days, however, hikers and cyclists in particular should keep an eye on the weather conditions. At Pentecost it gets pretty uncomfortable in some parts of Germany – and dangerous.
Especially in the southern half, meteorologists expect strong thunderstorms – “and that starts on Friday,” said weather expert Jan Schenk from The Weather Channel. As he and the German Weather Service (DWD) announce, storms with heavy rain, hail and occasionally even heavy gusts of wind are possible. According to Schenk, however, Friday will not be the focus of the weekend’s storms. “Even if these thunderstorms can be very strong.”
Weather at Pentecost: Experts warn of severe thunderstorms in the south
After a thundery Friday, Whit Saturday will probably be more moderate. “It will be the best day of the Pentecost weekend,” predicted Schenk. The DWD expects moderate, warm early summer temperatures of up to 25 degrees, especially for the north of Germany. In the rest of the country it will be muggy at 24 to 29 degrees, although the first changes in the weather can already occur. According to the DWD, severe thunderstorms can occur in the southern mountains in particular, which poses a real danger, especially for hikers and mountaineers.
Even stronger storms are apparently threatening on Sunday – then also beyond the southern half. “Then there are really heavy thunderstorms,” warns Schenk. The maximum values that day are said to be 24 to 29 degrees in the northwest and 19 to 24 degrees in the north. The experts predict that the storm front will come from the southwest and bring showers and thunderstorms with it.
A storm front is sweeping across the country – no return of summer on Monday either
During the day, the storms are expected to spread north and east, with the focus remaining in the south. “Here we have to reckon with the most severe storms,” says meteorologist Schenk. “So also with gusts of wind, also with hail and maybe even with super cells.” The damage that storms with hail and gusts of wind can cause only became clear on Thursday (June 2nd) in our neighboring country Austria. This caused damage in the millions.
In Germany, the return of summer is not to be expected on Whit Monday either. The DWD forecasts that it will be cloudy with varying degrees of cloudiness and rain in some areas. In the very south, in the north-east and in the east, single heavy showers and thunderstorms are again possible. The temperatures should rise to a maximum of 24 to 27 degrees. (kuc)
