We have been trying the new intelligent thermostat Tado X. although it was launched last year, it is now with the drop in temperatures when we have been able to take advantage of it. Tado X brings improvements in connectivity, with the Matter standard and THREAD technology, integration with any domestic system and a renewed design.
Tado has not reinvented the wheel with the design of the Tado X, but it has made some improvements. Its minimalist LED screen, which unfortunately is not tactile, shows the information clearly and allows quick adjustments with its three physical buttons. The smart thermostat maintains its discreet line and aesthetics, which facilitates its integration into any modern home. Like its predecessors.
Compatible with Apple Homekit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa
One of the main sales arguments of Tado X is its compatibility with Matter and Thread, two connectivity standards for the smart home. Which means that it integrates perfectly with Apple Homekit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, without the need for intermediaries.
This is where we find one of the big differences with the v3+tado. While the latter required another bridge device to connect to Wi-Fi and other devices, Tado X can work without it, if we have a router compatible with Thread. In theory, this improves the stability of the connection and reduces latency, something that in practice does notice when we interact with the app or give voice orders. In addition, we save another “pot” plugged into the house router. Anyway, Tado includes a small “bridge” in the package that we can connect directly to the light.
However, there is a problem, Tado X is not retrocompatible with the previous version. If you already have a V3+ tado system and want to update yourself, you will need to change the entire device ecosystem, which can be considerable expense.
One of the strengths of Tado has always been its ease of installation, and Tado X follows the same philosophy. The tado application guides you step by step the process, and in most cases, the installation can be done without professional help.
In our experience, installing the smart thermostat did not take more than 30 minutes. Of course, it depends on how your boiler is compatible, and if you have previous experience with other tados, such as our case.
The Tado app is still one of the best in the sector, with options such as intelligent time programming, manual and automatic control, geolocation to turn off the heating when we leave home and the famous open window detector. However, some advanced functions such as Auto-Assist require a monthly subscription (€ 3.99/month or € 29.99/year), something that many users could consider as an unnecessary extra cost.
Tado has always defended its devices as a method to reduce energy consumption, and in the weeks I have used, we can say that optimization functions really help to avoid waste energy. Integration with meteorological data allows you to adjust the temperature depending on the forecasts, and the geofencing function really makes the house only hot when necessary.
In terms of energy savings, the difference with version V3+ is not abysmal, but the greatest stability in the connection thanks to Thread makes temperature changes more precise and fast.
Is it worth it?
The million dollar question. If you already have the v3+tado, update to the Tado X it only makes sense if you really need Matter and Thread, or if you want to get rid of the bridge. If not, energy saving and functionality are not so different as to justify the investment.
If it is your first smart thermostat, Tado X is one of the best market options for its ease of use, integration with other improved systems and autonomy. However, the need for a subscription for some key functions and reduced compatibility with modulating boilers can make other models, such as netatm or Honeywell Evohome, be alternative to consider.
