Water companies in Belgium have converted seawater into drinking water for the first time in Nieuwpoort. This makes Flanders the first region on the North Sea to use the sea as a source for drinking water, reports the Belgian news agency Belga. The pilot project should lead to a factory in which by 2025, four million cubic meters of tap water will be produced annually from fresh and brackish water and seawater.
