A producer and a cameraman for the American broadcaster “Fox News” died during coverage of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in Kiev, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.
Cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski, 52, and producer Oleksandra Kurshynova, 24, were victims of an attack in Horenka, outside Kiev, on Monday (14). Both were in the same vehicle when they were hit. At the time, British colleague Benjamin Hall was also injured, who lost part of a leg, according to the statement released by the ministry.
At least five journalists have now been confirmed dead in the Ukrainian conflict, according to the Ukrainian Parliament’s Human Rights Commissioner, Liudmyla Denisova, who blamed the events on Russian troops.
“It is with great sadness and regret that we share this morning the news of the death of our beloved cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski. Pierre died in Horenka, on the outskirts of Kiev,” Suzanne Scott, executive director of the network, said in a statement.
“Truth is the target. Russian troops fired on the Fox News film crew near Kiev. Cameraman Pierre Zakrevsky and producer Oleksandra Kurshynova were killed. Journalist Benjamin Hall survived but lost part of his leg,” the ministry said. of Defense in Publication on twitter.
Scott said both journalists, who had been in Ukraine since early February, were gathering information on Monday, when their vehicle was targeted.
A veteran war reporter, Zakrzewski has covered multiple conflicts, including in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. “His passion and talent as a journalist was unparalleled. Today is a bleak day for ‘Fox News’ and for all reporters who risk their lives to report,” commented Scott. Hall, however, remains hospitalized in Ukraine, although the severity of his injuries is unclear. Last year, the network honored Zakrzewski with the “Fox News Media Spotlight Award.”
