Volvo becomes the first truck manufacturer in the world to use fossil fuel-free steel for their own vehicles. The steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and Volvo Trucks electric vehicles will be the first to use it. SSAB’s steel is produced using a completely new technology based on hydrogen. The result is a much lower climate impact than that caused by traditional steel. The small-scale introduction of this steel in Volvo’s heavy-duty electric vehicles will begin in the third quarter of 2022.
The first steel produced with hydrogen will be used in the side members, which is the backbone of the vehicle on which all the other major components are mounted. As the availability of fossil fuel-free steel increases, it will also be introduced in other parts of the vehicle. around 30% of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycled materials and up to 90% can be recycled at the end of its life cycle. The Volvo Group has been collaborating with SSAB to produce fossil fuel-free steel since 2021. The first machine, a dumper for use in mines and quarries made from this type of steel, was unveiled in October 2021. L ‘fossil fuel-free steel will be an important addition to the traditional and recycled steel that is used in Volvo heavy-duty vehicles. Volvo Trucks is committed to complying with the Paris Agreement and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain by 2040.
