In Mexico, even wild animals are already victims of violence and also of the paralysis, indifference and inefficiency of the authorities at all levels.
In the early hours of Friday, May 27, they blasted through the Ecoparc Conservation Center, which is located in the center of the capital of Colima, leaving behind a red deer and a mouflon sheep killed by the penetration of several bullets.
As you can imagine, the zoo workers are very scared, they fear for their lives and, of course, also for the lives of the animals. And it is understandable that they no longer want to go to work, as is happening in various businesses, offices and workplaces in Colima, given the terrible scenario of violence that is being experienced.
The point here is that animals need workers to survive, but then you can’t force anyone when there’s fear.
That same Friday, Ecopar authorities filed a criminal complaint with the Colima State Attorney General’s Office against those responsible for this cruel murder of animals and an act of violence against a wildlife conservation center that, it should be noted, is the only space recognized as a Center for the Conservation and Research of Wildlife (CIVS) by Semarnat.
But what can we expect? In the month of February alone there were 60 murders in that city due to clashes between organized crime. By March, the figure rose to 184 and as of May 20 there were already 358 riddled with bullets and neither the state nor the federal prosecutor’s office nor any authority is doing anything to put a stop to this wave of violence. And well, if they are not interested in human lives, they are hardly going to be interested in the life of animals.
But I cannot fail to take advantage of this space to make a call to the government of López Obrador and the state government to accept the serious situation that Colima is going through due to the disputes of organized crime. If a serious and forceful security strategy is not implemented, innocent people will continue to lose their lives without having to or fearing it.
We ask you to turn to see Colima, where one of the most important ports in the country is located, a wonderful state that was a great bastion of national tourism. They cannot abandon children, civilians, working people and now even animals to their fate.
Conservation centers must be places of peace, that guarantee security and tranquility because they are full of children, families, students and people who work for the protection of our fauna.
But very unfortunately, the generalized violence that is being experienced throughout the country has been cruelly and constantly hitting the people who defend and work to protect our natural resources. Let’s not forget that more than 60 environmentalists have been killed in three years, and now the animals themselves are also victims of violence.
A few months ago, the Croco Cun Conservation Center, in Quintana Roo, was kidnapped by criminals, causing the death of several specimens; At the beginning of this month they murdered Armando Coello Arroyo, owner and director of the Querétaro Wamerú Zoological Park, and now they have riddled animals from the Colima Conservation Center.
Here the thing is no longer just between organized crime groups, now at any time it’s our turn! That is why we demand that they come out of this paralysis and that they stop the violence, the government cannot continue to behave in defiance, deaf and insensitive.
