A new action that calls into question the level of Colombian refereeing occurred this Saturday, in the match between Once Caldas and Independiente Santa Fe, at the Palogrande stadium, in Manizales.
The Refereeing Commission decided to appoint four central judges with Fifa badges for the third date of the semi-final quadrangles. And even then the day was not exempt from a referee controversy.
It should be remembered that the Arbitration Commission is an independent entity that reports directly to the head of the Colombian Football Federation. Monitoring the work of the judges is in charge of a technical commission whose visible head is former referee Imer Machado.
For the game in Manizales, the Commission sent Carlos Betancur, international judge since 2016, as central judge. The two linesmen, Alexander Guzmán (since 2012) and Mary Blanco (since 2016), and the fourth referee, John Alexander León (since 2016), also have Fifa status.
The error of the referees in the action of James Aguirre
However, despite their long experience, none of the members of the refereeing team noticed an infraction committed by the Once Caldas goalkeeper, James Aguirre.
In the first stage, Aguirre came out to cut off a ball on the side of the field that Santa Fe goalkeeper, Andrés Mosquera Marmolejo, threw. Aguirre carried it with his feet and, before entering the area, picked it up with his hand.
Aguirre cleared the ball without the judges reacting to his infraction and without any of the Santa Fe players complaining about what happened.
It is important to clarify that the VAR does not intervene in this type of actions, which is why Betancur is fully responsible.
