On August 8th the film based on the series was released video games of Borderlands. Shortly before, the critics had already begun to criticize it, placing it as one of the worst adaptations and among the worst films of 2024. And to think that we already had a good run of games ported to other media.
Now that it seems the curse of adaptations has returned, we are worried about some that are on the way. That’s why here we share with you some that could be a huge disappointment when they make the jump to the small and big screen. I hope there isn’t one you’re expecting.
Video game adaptations that worry us
Bioshock is already looking like it will be another one with the curse of video game adaptations
Let’s start with one of the longest-in-development projects on this entire list: BioShock. Since 2008, an adaptation of these 2K video games to the cinema by Universal Pictures was announced.Unfortunately, after several delays and changes in production teams, this first attempt was canned.
Netflix decided to rescue it from oblivion and in 2022 they announced that they would resume the project of bringing the world of Rapture to the screens of their subscribers. Although the streaming giant has very good adaptations in its catalog, it also has the terrible series of resident Evil.
As if that were not enough, at the recent San Diego Comic Con its producer stated that Netflix cut their budget for BioShock. This meant that instead of the grandiose project they had in mind, it will be a more personal story for the protagonist. We’d definitely rather stick with video games.
Minecraft has us wondering what it will be about
Given the tremendous success of Minecraft, it’s no surprise that Hollywood has already decided to make a film adaptation of it. However, we must admit that it’s not one of those video games that stands out for its story. After all, there is no other objective than to survive and collect resources.
We have no idea what they plan to do with their movie, but even from their casting choices we’re a bit skeptical. Jack Black will play Steve and Jason Momoa will be a mysterious antagonist. They’ll probably go for a self-referential comedy, but the truth is that anything could happen.
Like BioShock, this adaptation has been in the works for quite some time. Plans for it were announced back in 2014. It also had a very busy road to the start of production, which was perhaps a sign not to make it. So far, there are only images of its animals and Jack Black looking like himself. We’ll see which spectrum of video game adaptations it falls into when it’s released in April 2025.
Among Us could be one of those video game adaptations made without love and just to make money
Here we have a situation similar to that of Minecraft. Yes ok Among Us became a sensation when we were all locked down by the pandemic, it really doesn’t have much juice to draw from its premise. Even so, an animated series is already on the way But how many seasons can it last without revealing who the impostor is?
In addition, some first looks have already come out. These show that its animation is not the best. Unfortunately, we believe that we are facing another of the video game adaptations made only to extract more money from the original work and that it could be quite disappointing.
Does anyone remember the video games? Golden Axe from Sega? If so, you’ll remember that it was a fantasy hack n slash with a knight, a warrior and a dwarf. It could lend itself to an animated action series in the same style as Castlevaniabut it won’t be like that.
Since the series will be an adaptation created by Comedy Central, they decided that its tone would be precisely funny. In fact, its main scriptwriter will be the writer of several episodes of American Dad and its voice cast will include famous comedians from the United States.
Of course, there’s the possibility that it could be a very good comedy, but as an adaptation of Sega’s video games, it failed from the start. In addition to the comedic tone, its protagonist will be a totally new character described as a weakling who will learn from the heroes of the games.Let’s see how it turns out, but we don’t have that much faith in it.
Uncharted 2 surely won’t be much better than the first one
Here we have an adaptation that we can easily see why it will fail. After all the first film was not very good as an adaptation of the video games. Uncharted. Still, it managed to raise enough money to secure a sequel. Probably because of Tom Holland’s power of attraction.
However, it is precisely this actor who is one of the factors that could cause the sequel to fail. From the first film, he showed that he is not very good at the role of Nathan Drake. He gave us more of an explorer version of Peter Parker. Not to mention Mark Wahlberg as Sully, as he doesn’t resemble the character and has no chemistry with Holland.
The same team both in front of and behind the cameras will be back for the sequel so we can’t expect much improvement. So far the only thing we know is that the director would like to adapt Sam’s chase in Uncharted 4. As for the rest, may God bless the fans of these video games.
Watch Dogs now represents everything wrong with video game adaptations
Watch Dogs Yes, they have a very extensive lore throughout their three video games so far. In fact if they followed the stories of the first two with some adjustments, they could have interesting hacking thrillers.Unfortunately, they have already said that it will be a completely separate story.
We already have enough supposed adaptations that ignore the original games. What’s the point of naming it after Watch Dogs if it will be its own thing? They will probably just give us a simple story about a criminal hacker and feel satisfied.
Moreover, its director and actors are relatively unknown until now, which makes us think that they could not get the interest of someone more renowned. We also can’t forget that it wouldn’t be the first time that Ubisoft brought one of its video games to the big screen and the results have been very bad. Do you remember Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia?
These are just a few of several video game adaptations on the way. But these are the ones that, in our opinion, have the most potential to fail and leave fans of their titles very disappointed. Hopefully one of these will shut us up, but right now their path isn’t the best. What other adaptation can you think of that could fail?
