The last two weeks of Formula 1 took place in the name of Max Verstappenwinner of the Canadian Grand Prix – for the first time in his career on the Montreal circuit – and author of the sixth win of the season, the second in a row after the success in Baku. For the reigning world champion, who is also the protagonist in qualifying with the conquest of pole position, his leadership is getting stronger also in the world championship, with the gap from the direct pursuers increased at the end of one of the tests for him more complex in this first half of the season. The Dutchman, interviewed after the celebrations on the top step of the podium, in fact remarked the excellent pace shown by Ferrari during the entire event, expressed above all by Carlos Sainz in the final laps of the race, when the Spaniard put in serious discussion the first position of the number 1 of Red Bull.
“In general, the race was difficult – commented Verstappen – I was hoping the car had more pace, but the Ferrari looked very strong. Of course I could only compare myself to Carlos, but it was hard to match his lap times. Even after the last stop I was coming back under on the new tires, but I wasn’t sure it would be enough to catch him at the end. Then the Safety Car came out, but I said to myself that this wasn’t going to be that good either. I had already done a few laps pushing hard on the tires and he was behind me on fresh tires. Both scenarios weren’t ideal, but I had to take the race home ”.
In addition, Verstappen described the major difficulties encountered in the last leg of the race, i.e. from the exit of the Safety Car to the checkered flag: “In the final laps I pushed hard, but at the same time I couldn’t even afford to make a mistake, so it wasn’t easy – has explained – however, I succeeded. Today they had more pace than us. There are lessons to be looked at as to why this happened on a low grip track. In one race we seem the strongest, in the next they seem to be the strongest. We are two teams with very similar values ”.
