The last lap of qualifying with the heart in the throat of Max Verstappen held all Formula 1 fans in suspense, a compendium of all the emotions that the category can offer: talent, speed, courage and the inevitable final twist. The surprise was not positive for the Dutchman from Red Bull, who ended up on the barriers at the exit of Curva 27 when he was more than two tenths ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s pole position. This will force the world leader to start from the second row of the starting grid, in third position behind the two Mercedes. The news on the gearbox seems to be positive and it seems that Verstappen will not be forced to replace him and therefore move back five places with respect to his placement in qualifying.
The level of performance shown on Saturday, however, leaves hope for the flagship of Red Bull, still convinced that he can have his say despite the front row armored by the Silver Arrows dressed in black: “I’m confident. I certainly would have liked to have started first, but from third position winning will be a bit more difficult, but certainly not impossible. I have hope, because in Qatar we were out of pace, but our car is working a little better here. It seems that on this track we can stay well in the wake of the other cars, and if so we will have a good chance. I hope everything will go well, even if we don’t really know what the tires will be like“. Verstappen returned to the decisive mistake: “From my sensations I always braked at the same point, but I had a slight block and I tried to finish the tour anyway. But I took the block at the exit and I couldn’t continue and obviously this was extremely disappointing ”.
