Red Bull’s weekend on defense
There Red Bull decided not to use the special liveries inspired by fans in Singapore and Texas so as not to weigh down the RB20s with extra grams of paint. The Milton Keynes team has just lost the lead in the Constructors’ championship to McLaren after what happened in Baku and Marina Bay in 2023 the RB19 will go into crisis, not going beyond the fifth place finish with Max Verstappen.
The Dutch driver thus presented a weekend that promises to be a defensive one for Red Bull, in the hope that from Austin onwards, when hostilities resume, the RB20 can return to fighting at the top: “We understood what we did wrong in Baku and we can try something different in Singapore, but it will be difficult this weekend for us as it has been historically – said Verstappen – the changes we made initially in Baku were positive and we were going in the right direction, we think we know what we can do better and obviously we need to make sure we optimise the set-up in the slow corners to try to control the oscillations of the car.”
Sergio Perez hopes to redeem the disappointment of Baku when a well-deserved podium position slipped away on the penultimate lap due to contact with Carlos Sainz: “It was a real shame for the whole team in Baku because we worked hard to get a more competitive car on the track and we did that. We had the right pace all weekend and now it’s about converting that pace into a podium in Singapore. The car has proven to be competitive with this package so we need to find the right set-up all weekend and execute the sessions perfectly. I have won in Singapore before, in difficult conditions and as everyone knows I love street circuits, there’s something special about a night race and this is probably the best one yet. I want to be able to say on Sunday night that we gave our best to win this race and that’s what we’ll be focusing on from the moment we start working in Singapore.”
