Jorge Arreaza, who was Hugo Chávez’s son-in-law, presented his candidacy for the governor of the state of Barinas in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Aurora Silva, wife of Venezuelan opponent Freddy Superlano, who won the regional elections in the November 21 elections, was disqualified from holding public office. The repetition of the elections was ordered by the Supreme Court of Justice after a constitutional protection action filed by a dissident from the opposition.
This Monday, December 6, Jorge Arreaza, former Venezuelan Foreign Minister, registered as a candidate for the governorship of the state of Barinas, the place where his former father-in-law Hugo Chávez was born. It did so under the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). The elections are scheduled to take place on January 9, after a repetition ordered by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).
“I make a call to the rest of the candidates to a clean contest, respecting the regulations, the different visions and with the commitment that the people give their trust to the best of the projects,” said Arreaza when making his aspiration official.
The candidate also expressed his desire “that together we can build the Barinas state that it truly deserves.” And he assured that “they are working with very precise guidelines from President Nicolás Maduro,” for which he hopes “to present the government plan for the region in a few days.”
After the caraqueño’s registration, the PSUV organized an event in which a large part of the party was present. Among them, Diosdado Cabello, his first vice president, who expressed his commitment to Arreaza.
“I inform you that the campaign command has been installed in the state of Barinas to accompany Jorge Arreaza and the entire national leadership of the PSUV at the instruction of the party, Nicolás Maduro, is here with Jorge and the people of Barinas for this great victory January 9, “Cabello said.
Then Arreaza spoke. The candidate, criticized for his lack of charisma, affirmed that they are “about to give another democratic lesson in the state of Hugo Chávez.” And he confessed that he always takes into account “the three R’s” from which he learned from the late president, “revision, rectification and re-impulse”, which he considered “will be its central axis.”
In addition, he promised to carry out several works and recalled that “there are some companies that were transferred from the national government to the regional one.”
The current Governor Argenis Chávez, brother of former President Hugo Chávez, resigned his post and his candidacy after last November’s elections, in which Freddy Superlano obtained the majority of the votes. Argenis succeeded Adán Chávez, another of his brothers.
Aurora Silva was disqualified from holding public office
Aurora Silva, wife of Venezuelan opponent Freddy Superlano, who won the regional elections in the November 21 elections, was disqualified from holding public office. Silva intended to run to compete in the repeat elections ordered by the TSJ.
In his Twitter account, Superlano wrote that “the Government tries to silence the voice of rebellion and change that started in Barinas. Last night they gave another continuous blow to the popular will, preventing Aurora’s candidacy.”

In addition, he appealed to the international community. Do not be “only reporters of arbitrariness,” he said, adding that “the despair of the regime will not dampen the will for peaceful and electoral change.”
Why are the Barinas elections repeated?
In the Barinas elections, held on November 21, Freddy Superlano received the majority of the votes. The high court had reported that “the projections recorded by the National Electoral Council (CNE) gave a percentage of votes in favor of candidate Freddy Superlano of 37.60%, compared to 37.21% of votes obtained by the candidate (official) Argenis Chávez “.
However, on November 29, the Supreme Court ordered a repeat of the elections in Barinas after a constitutional protection action filed by Adolfo Superlano, who is considered a dissident of the opposition.
Adolfo insisted that Freddy Superlano had violated a series of constitutional rights, since he appeared despite being disqualified. However, the winner of the elections was pardoned by Nicolás Maduro and his application was not annulled, as he did with other applicants.
Faced with this situation, the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court declared, “by mere right, the resolution of the constitutional amparo action filed with a request for a precautionary measure” and announced the “disqualification from the exercise of any public office of the opponent Freddy Superlano.”
