Through a statement, the Government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela he asked the president-elect, Gustavo Petro, to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela expresses the firmest will to work on the construction of a renewed stage of comprehensive relations for the common good of the nation that we share protected by two sovereign republics, whose destinies will never be indifference, but solidarity, cooperation and peace of brother peoples”, states the official communication.

In the letter, the Government of Maduro congratulated the Colombian people for “the historic election day this Sunday, June 19where Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego was elected as President of the Republic and Francia Márquez as Vice President”.

Hours before, when the results of the pre-count of the second round were known, the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, on his Twitter account congratulated the candidate of the Historical Pact for the results.

On the day of this Sunday, Gustavo Petro obtained 50.44 percent of the votes (11,281,013) against his contender, the former mayor of Bucaramanga, Rodolfo Hernández, who received 47.31 percent (10,580,412 votes).
