Vasseur defends tire change with red flag
From the perspective of having lost a car in the chess game of Monaco to restore the starting situation with the advantage of no longer having to think about the pit stop. The accident between Kevin Magnussen and Sergio Perez, which also involved Nico Hulkenberg, was a blessing for Ferrari.
Carlos SainzIn fact, he had suffered a puncture at the exit of Sainte-Devote after trying to attack Oscar Piastri on the inside. The Spanish driver had parked at the Casino and was unable to turn right to go to Mirabeau. When it happened at the back of the group, however, it made the red flag necessary which allowed Sainz to return to third position at the restart and all the drivers to change tires as they no longer had to necessarily enter the pit lane once they restarted.
The Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur in the press conference he explained why what had happened in the first meters of the race was essentially cancelled: “We were busy talking to Carlos to see if he could get the car started again. But then we saw the red flag and realized that there was another accident. Surely when they told us that not all the cars had crossed the first sector line and the order at the Safety Car line had to be rebuilt it was good news“. The number one on the Ferrari wall also defends the rule of changing tires under the red flag regime: “Imagine if we had been halfway through the race, the situation would have been different. Some would have already stopped and some wouldn’t, so some would be disadvantaged if they had to stop again, it would be unfair. There is no perfect rule that fits every situation“.
