SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Vale announced on Monday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Nippon Steel Corporation to seek solutions to decarbonize the steel industry.
According to a statement, the companies intend to jointly study and explore solutions for the use of metallics – such as direct reduced iron (DRI) and pig iron produced by Tecnored technology – and the use of green briquettes from Vale in the process of manufacturing iron and other products. with a lower carbon footprint, such as pellets.
Vale said that the initiative with Japan’s largest integrated steel producer will help achieve its commitment to reduce Scope 3 net emissions by 15% by 2035.
The mining company aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 33% by 2030 and achieve neutrality by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, he added.
