“From the point of view of vaccination prevention, the family doctor has the advantage of a relationship of trust with his patient: he knows the person and their clinical, anamnestic and family history. In fact, by following the patient over time, the general practitioner is able to understand and decide whether there is a need for a certain vaccination coverage rather than another. The family doctor takes care of the entire counseling part, advising and making the patient understand the importance of this vaccination and directing him to the most suitable place and treatment path”. This was said by Paola Pedrini, general practitioner and general secretary of Fimmg Lombardia, on the occasion of the conference “Staying healthy thanks to vaccination prevention in adults: the example of the vaccine against Herpes Zoster”, the first stage of the campaign promoted by Longevitas Foundation, to improve people’s quality of life, optimize and reduce healthcare spending through the development of healthy longevity, allowing important savings to be reinvested in health.
The initiative, which took place in the Sala Gonfalone of Palazzo Pirelli in Milan, was carried out with the patronage of the Lombardy Region and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and with the support of GSK.
The new guidelines for the Herpes zoster vaccine provide that it can be administered by a general practitioner: “Having the Herpes zoster vaccine available in the clinic – underlines Pedrini – makes it much easier for both us doctors and the patient, as Since the patient is already in the facility, administration can be direct. We could also organize vaccination campaigns for specific categories and age groups, in order to draw patients to the attention and importance of this vaccination. Our most important target is the frail elderly and chronic patients, who are more subject to the complications of these diseases. For them, prevention is even more important,” he concludes.
