Passport blocked? Doesn't matter! Drivers in South Tyrol still take the snowy shortcut – and the fire brigade is raging about the towing emergencies at an altitude of 2000 meters.
Penser Joch – That shouldn’t be the case now? The Egg fire brigade is literally throwing its hands over its head: holidaymakers in South Tyrol simply don't learn anything. Once again, drivers ignored the closure of a pass road and then had to be rescued promptly.
Drivers ignore the pass closure in South Tyrol and get stuck in the snow
“Every year again! A call to EVERYONE, there is a reason why our pass roads are closed to traffic. Please stick to it,” writes the volunteer fire department on its Facebook page. This time there were two cars that got stuck on the snowy Penser Joch. Emergency services from Stilfes and Pens had to intervene.
At 2211 meters, the Penser Joch is the highest point of a controversial shortcut from Vipiteno to Bozen. This is where the western and eastern ridges of the Sarntal Alps meet. The road is very high and is therefore particularly susceptible to snow and is often closed. And there can also be heavy snowfalls in the Alps in spring.
Dangerous pass used as a shortcut: Fire brigade tows away cars in the Alps
The fire brigades explain that the route is particularly popular with delivery trucks from Eastern Europe South Tyrol news. But tourists often get lost on the pass, as in this case. The emergency services had to help two cars out of the misery at the top of the pass and tow them away, one of which had holidaymakers in it.
People often underestimate the natural conditions in the Alps. Whether it's drivers who want to save on tolls or hikers who think they can get to the Zugspitze in sneakers. In some places, mountain rescue and fire departments can hardly stop shaking their heads. (moe)
