The accident was caused because the vehicle, which was in autonomous driving mode, stopped suddenly in the middle of the highway, while the cars that came behind him failed to brake and rear-ended the Tesla, generating a line of crashed cars along the lane.

The accident was captured by the tunnel’s security cameras, where it can be seen how the car slows down in the far left lane of the road, while other vehicles collide from behind. After the incident, the emergency services were immediately called in to attend to the injured.

For its part, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States, known by its acronym (NHTSA), opened an investigation into the case since the vehicle was driven by the autonomous driving system ‘Full Self Driving’ (FSD), which offers the Tesla brand to its vehicles.

This automatic driving system (both Tesla’s FSD system and other brands’ autopilot system), It has over 36 investigations for cases in which they were related to traffic accidents. Among them, 19 deaths have been attributed to these systems.
