It is weather warnings for more than eighty million people in Canada and the United States, where a winter storm has brought heavy snow and frost. More than 145,000 people are without electricity in some southeastern states and thousands of flights are canceled. The states of Virginia, Georgia and North and South Carolina have declared a state of emergency. The US National Weather Service (NWS) says more than 30 inches of snow are expected in some areas. Snow and ice could cause “dangerous travel, power outages and tree damage,” warned Nws. More than 3,000 flights in and out of the United States were canceled yesterday, according to FlightAware’s data tracking website.
In the Canadian province of Ontario, which shares the border with New York state, storm warnings were issued yesterday for much of the south. Toronto, the provincial capital and largest city in Canada, is expected to be covered in 20 centimeters of snow.
