Basketball: Magic have to continue to worry
The Wagner brothers still have to worry about direct play-off participation in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. Without basketball world champion Franz Wagner, who had an ankle injury, the team from Florida lost clearly 99:117 against top team the Milwaukee Bucks, who had to do without star player Giannis Antetokounmpo. Moritz Wagner scored seven points in 21 minutes of playing time, but could not prevent the second defeat in a row.
With two game days before the end of the regular season, Orlando has to continue to tremble. The team is still in fourth place in the East with 46 wins and 34 defeats, but a fall into the play-in places is still possible in the final spurt. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in seventh place with 45 wins and 35 defeats, which would only be enough for the pre-play-off round.
“We want to stay on track. We control what we can control,” said Magic coach Jamahl Mosley: “We have to be very focused in the next two games.”
Meanwhile, Maximilian Kleber and the Dallas Mavericks continue to be in top form. The fifth-place team in the Western Conference, which has already qualified for the play-offs, celebrated its twelfth win in the last 13 games with a 111:92 win over the Miami Heat – also thanks to top player Luka Doncic, who put up 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Kleber had four points and two rebounds in 20 minutes. “We know the work isn’t done yet and we’re just getting started,” said setup player Kyrie Irving.
The Texans' upcoming first round opponent, the Los Angeles Clippers, lost to the Phoenix Suns 108:124. The Clippers, for whom world champion Daniel Theis scored two points in ten minutes, had to struggle with serious injury problems. In addition to top player Kawhi Leonard, who had a long-term knee injury, James Harden, Paul George and Russel Westbrook were also out.
National team captain Dennis Schröder celebrated a success. In the largely insignificant sporting duel against his former team Toronto Raptors, his Brooklyn Nets prevailed 106:102. Schröder impressed with 21 points and nine assists.
Ice hockey: Two scorer points from Draisaitl in the Oilers' win
National ice hockey player Leon Draisaitl scored in the NHL and added another goal in the Edmonton Oilers' clear win against the Vegas Golden Knights. In the 5-1 win against the rivals from the Pacific Division on Wednesday evening, Draisaitl scored his 41st goal of the season after assisting Zach Hyman to make it 3-0. The Oilers controlled the game even without injured star Connor McDavid and celebrated their third win in a row. In the main round of the National Hockey League, the team now has 101 points.
The evening was less pleasant for national player Lukas Reichel. With the Chicaco Blackhawks he lost to the St. Louis Blues 2:5.
