Dirk Nowitzki is now a TV commentator
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Basketball: Nowitzki guest starred as co-commentator at the NBA All Star Game
Dirk Nowitzki has guest-starred as a co-commentator on US television at the NBA’s All Star Game, poking fun at old rivalries alongside Dwayne Wade. “It’s fine now,” Nowitzki said as they discussed the competition between him and Wade, who contributed to one of the bitter losses of Nowitzki’s career as part of the Miami Heat. In 2006 the Mavericks lost the final series against Miami, in 2011 there was a new edition for Dallas and Nowitzki. “We can all be friends,” said Nowitzki, who was voted one of the 75th best basketball players in NBA history.
“I couldn’t have imagined that when I came from Germany 24 years ago or something: to be able to be in this room, to be able to talk to some of the greatest of all time and to be a part of it,” said Nowitzki. “It was amazing, I had a blast in there.”
Basketball: James and Curry win Allstar Game
Basketball superstars LeBron James and Stephen Curry decided the NBA All-Star Game. Team captain James hit the last shot of the game to make it 163:160 against Team Durant. In his native Cleveland, the 37-year-old won the Allstar Game with his selection for the fifth time in a row. The best man on the field, however, was Curry.
The Golden State Warriors star had 50 points, including 16 three-pointers, just two points short of Anthony Davis’ 2017 best. “I really tried,” said Curry, but he was still voted MVP of the game.
Ice hockey: Oilers collect clear clap in the NHL – Stützle meets
The Edmonton Oilers’ winning streak under their new coach ended with a bang on Sunday. The team around national ice hockey player Leon Draisaitl conceded a 3:7 in the home game against the Minnesota Wild after five previous successes. “Of course we played a lot of games, but we don’t want to use that as an excuse,” said Draisaitl, who gave an assist. “I’m pretty sure it was just one of those nights. We played five very good games in a row. Even today we had good phases,” he said.
Tim Stützle’s eleventh goal of the season was not enough for the Ottawa Senators in a 2-1 draw against the New York Rangers. Even in the 2-3 win against the Boston Bruins the day before, a goal by the international was not enough for a Senators win. With the two goals, the 20-year-old is now the most successful player from the 2020 vintage. “I’m here to win hockey games, that’s my focus. It’s not that important who scores the most goals,” said Stützle. Second is Alexis Lafrenière, who was picked top of the talent pool by Rangers two years ago and failed to score on Sunday.
Basketball: Franz Wagner’s university trainer beats assistant coach after defeat
The former university coach of NBA professional Franz Wagner beat an assistant coach of the opponent from Wisconsin after the Michigan Wolverines lost. Videos published by several US media outlets showed Juwan Howard hitting assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft’s head with his flat hand on Sunday, triggering a major scuffle with shoving. This was preceded by a war of words with head coach Greg Gard, which was apparently about a late timeout in the game, which Michigan lost 63-77.
Commentators expected Howard to be suspended, and his university and the relevant association announced that the incident would be dealt with quickly. Berlin’s Franz Wagner played under Howard at Michigan College last season and is now active in the NBA for the Orlando Magic.
