The United States has decided to expel from the country a Russian official who works for the United Nations and whom it accuses of acting as an “intelligence agent” for Moscow.
“On February 28, the United States began the process to demand the departure of a Russian intelligence agent who works at the United Nations and who abused his privileges,” a spokesman for the US mission said on Tuesday (1). at the United Nations to the EFE Agency.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the expelled person, whose identity he refused to reveal, works at the General Secretariat and will have to leave his post on the 14th.

The US action came a day after the country announced that it had declared 12 diplomats from the Russian mission to the UN persona non grata and accused them of carrying out “espionage”, in addition to giving them a deadline of March 7 to leave the country. .
According to a US government statement, the 12 are “intelligence agents” who “abused their US residency privileges by engaging in espionage activities that are harmful” to national security.
“This action has been ongoing for several months,” US spokeswoman Olivia Dalton said, claiming the cases are unrelated to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
