The US administration has officially recognized the violence committed by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya people as genocide and a crime against humanity. Writes about this on Sunday, March 20, the agency Reuters with reference to US officials.
It is noted that the position of the US authorities will be voiced by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Monday, March 21, during a speech at the Washington Holocaust Memorial Museum.
In addition, he intends to announce a US $1 million grant for a UN agency that is gathering evidence of the Myanmar genocide for possible future prosecution.
According to the agency, the public recognition of the commission of an act of genocide does not mean the subsequent introduction of US sanctions against the Myanmar authorities.
Back in December 2018, the international law firm Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG) announced the results of its investigation and legal analysis of the events regarding the persecution of the Rohingya ethnic group. It was noted that the killings by the Myanmar authorities of this minority were a manifestation of genocide.
According to PILPG, lawyers have identified about 13,000 serious cases of human rights violations.
Earlier, in September of that year, an investigation by the US administration concluded that the armed forces in Myanmar were conducting a planned campaign against the Muslim Rohingya people. The US State Department then reported that the crimes against the Rohingya people were of a large-scale and extraordinary nature in order to intimidate the population and oust the Rohingya people.
In 2016-2017, the media reported on the ongoing military persecution of a Muslim group by the Myanmar military and police in Rakhine State (northwestern region of the country). The harassment came in response to attacks by unidentified gunmen on border posts in October 2016. The Myanmar authorities are accused of widespread human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions, arson and the killing of children.
