Ford, General Motors and Stellantis agreed to pay striking workers for their time at demonstrations, as part of new labor agreements reached late last month with the United Auto Workers (UAW) auto union to end the strike. . The action is unusual in the history of negotiations between the parties, according to a source.
UAW workers who participated in the demonstrations at the three companies are expected to receive an average of just over $100 a day for the time they were on strike. The amount is in addition to the $500 per week that the UAW paid workers who participated in the strike from its own funds, sources said.
More than 45,000 workers went on strike for about six weeks, although certain locations remained on strike longer than others.
Unionized employees at Detroit automakers who were temporarily laid off as a result of the strike are also expected to receive similar pay from the companies.
In recent weeks, the union has reached tentative agreements with each automaker. If ratified, they would increase workers’ pay by 25% over four years, as well as offer cost-of-living adjustments and other enhanced benefits. The additional benefits are expected to cost each company tens of millions of dollars, some people said.
The worker payments influenced the union’s decision to have members return to work at nine factories and dozens of parts distribution centers before interim agreements were ratified, allowing the companies to restart production. Source: Dow Jones Newswires.
