The US Army Central Command said: “At approximately 1:30 a.m. (Sanaa time) on May 31, the Iran-backed Houthis launched a drone from the areas they control in Yemen towards the Red Sea.”
The statement added: “The drone crashed in the Red Sea without any injuries or damage reported by American, coalition, or commercial ships.”
He continued: “Separately, between 2:53 am and 10:59 pm (Sanaa time) on the same day, US Central Command forces succeeded in destroying a drone over the Gulf of Aden in addition to three drones over the Red Sea that were launched from the areas.” Under the control of the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
The statement noted, “At approximately 9:31 p.m. (Sanaa time), the Houthis launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles from the areas they control in Yemen towards the Gulf of Aden. No casualties or damage were reported by American or coalition ships or Commercial Ships: It is determined that these drones and anti-ship ballistic missiles pose an imminent threat to US, coalition forces, and commercial vessels in the region. This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters protected and safer for US, coalition, and commercial vessels.
The Houthis have been launching attacks targeting international shipping traffic in the Red Sea since November, which they say are in solidarity with the Palestinians in light of the ongoing war in Gaza, which has sparked American and British retaliatory strikes since February.
On Friday, Yahya Saree, the military spokesman for the Houthi group, said in a statement that the group launched a missile attack on the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea in response to US-British strikes on the governorates of Sanaa, Hodeidah, and Taiz in Yemen.
