Urban planning Residential apartment buildings may rise in a historically valuable block in Kamppi – Observation image shows change

Helsinki In Kamppi, new residential apartment buildings may be erected in the future in the historically valuable Kottarainen block, located between Eerikinkatu, Albertinkatu and Kalevankatu.

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Helsinki City Environmental Board approved an amendment to the town plan that will enable additional construction. The final change in the plan is decided by the city council.

Starling block is located near Hietalahdentori. There are six buildings in the block: Three wooden houses were built as apartments in the 1840s, and a red-brick former brewery building dates from the late 19th century. Two also made of red bricks, architect Congratulations Tarjanteen the former school building planned for 1925 and 1933.

The buildings in the block have recently been used by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

The housing investment company Kojam, the former VVO, bought the plot in 2017 from the City of Helsinki as part of a larger real estate transaction. It also included the then main building on the edge of Metropolia’s Hietalahdentori, as well as the offices of Agricolankatu, Onnentie, Tukholmankatu and Sofianlehto at the University of Applied Sciences.

The Kottarainen block is to be converted for residential, commercial and business use. Buildings would be demolished from the courtyard of the block, and two residential apartment buildings are to be built in their place.

The new residential floor area is 11,340 square meters, and the business floor area is 6,225 square meters. The increase in population is about 250.

Some of the old buildings, such as the wooden houses on Kalevankatu, would be protected by a town plan.
