What do candidates need?
The candidates to succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party and eventually British Prime Minister they will need the support of at least 20 conservative deputies, the so-called Committee 192 has arranged this Monday2, which brings together the “tory” parliamentary group and organizer of the process.
This committee, which also renewed its executive this Monday, also indicated that it hopes to announce the name of the winner of the internal elections on September 5, when parliamentary sessions will resume after the summer recess.
The “tory” executive increased from 8 to 20 the nominations required to appear in the primaries in order to reduce the number of applicants and accelerate the replacement of Johnson, who last Thursday announced his resignation but remains acting head of government.

The committee, chaired by Graham Brady, also decided that candidates who do not obtain at least 30 votes from the 358 Conservative deputies in the House of Commons will be eliminated in the first round of voting this Wednesday.
The 1922 Committee plans to hold two elimination rounds this week – Wednesday and Thursday – and would organize more next week if necessary. The intention is to have two finalists before the parliamentary summer recess, which begins on July 21, Brady said.
These two candidates would then submit to an election by mail among the affiliates of the ruling party – some 200,000, according to 2021 data -, after an electoral campaign in August, indicated the head of the “Tory” deputies.
The winner of the grassroots vote will be announced on Monday, September 5, the first day of business at Parliament in Westminster, he added.
At least eleven candidates have applied to succeed Johnson, including the former economy minister during the pandemic, Rishi Sunak, and the still foreign minister, Liz Truss, although some are expected to leave the race if they do not meet the 20 nominations.
