“Over 75s in the gym are a sign of positivity, of active aging. But to feel good it is particularly important to move, even just outdoors. So it is not necessary in this phase of life to necessarily sign up for a fitness center. Just avoid the elevator”, the sofa and the car. This is how Andrea Ungar, president of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (SIGG) and full professor of geriatrics at the University of Florence, comments to Adnkronos Salute on the increase in eighty-year-olds who sign up for a gym to fight sarcopenia, muscle loss, and to keep in shape not only their body but also their mind.
“30% of people over 75 have frailty and chronic diseases – explains Ungar – but 70% are well, they do more and more sports even if they maybe take a pill for hypertension. They are certainly a model for today’s young people, increasingly obese and sedentary who will not reach the milestone of 80 years”. Furthermore, “when we talk about the elderly we always refer to RSAs, to the frailty typical of the Third Age, to chronic diseases linked to aging. Instead, it is good to know that there is a segment of the population advanced in years that is active and well” he concludes.
