Unemployment in the Netherlands fell further in October. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the unemployment rate was the same as in February 2020, before the corona pandemic. Due to the strong economic recovery from the corona crisis, the demand for personnel is high and there are shortages of employees in various sectors.
As a result, unemployment as a share of the labor force has fallen to 2.9 percent. In October, 277,000 people were unemployed. The unemployment rate was still 3.1 percent in September.
Thanks to the corona support from the government, there have been few unemployed for some time. Various branches opened again in the summer months, which were previously closed due to the corona measures. This allowed more people to work there. Young people in particular have benefited from this.

Over the past three months, the number of workers aged 15 to 75 years increased by an average of 21,000 per month to 9.2 million, according to the statistics office. In addition to the unemployed, there were also 3.7 million other unemployed people in this age group. They have not recently looked for a new job or were not immediately available. They are therefore not counted as part of the working population at Statistics Netherlands. Their numbers have fallen by an average of 19,000 per month in the last three months.
At the end of last month, the UWV benefits agency paid 199,100 unemployment benefits. That was 8800 fewer than in September. The cultural sector, the hotel and catering industry and the retail trade experienced a strong decline in particular. The number of unemployment benefits rose by more than 3 percent only in the agriculture, landscaping and fishing sector. According to CBS, this is due to the season.
