On October 24, a petition appeared on the website of the office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky about the transition of the country from Cyrillic to Latin.
“I ask you to consider the possibility of switching our Ukrainian alphabet to the Latin alphabet (within the limits of the modern English alphabet). There are enough reasons for such a transition, and they are obvious, ”the petition says.
At the same time, the authors of the initiative did not name specific reasons. They called the transition to the Latin alphabet a topical issue.
The authors of the initiative noted that, in their opinion, the transition to the Latin alphabet is now more relevant than ever before.
In order for the petition to be considered by Zelensky, it must gain 25,000 votes. So far, 60 people have signed the petition.
Earlier, on October 21, Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), said that the Russian language should disappear from the territory of Ukraine as an element of hostile propaganda and brainwashing of the population. He urged Russian-speaking residents of Ukraine “to go to their swamps and croak in their Russian language.”
In Ukraine, the process of “de-Russification” continues, which began at the end of February. Prior to that, on September 12, the Kyiv State Council published a list of 40 renamed streets, avenues and squares associated with Russia and the Soviet past.
Meanwhile, on August 6, the American magazine The Wall Street Journal published an article, the author of which pointed out that the Kyiv authorities were forcibly implanting Ukrainian culture.
On the same day, Ukrainian Twitter users were outraged by the material. One commentator said that the rhetoric of a representative of a Western country “demonstrates typical Western ignorance and frivolity.”
In 2019, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”. At the same time, the Constitution of the country in theory guarantees “the free development, use and protection of Russian and other languages of national minorities.”
