The EU foreign ministers decide on tough sanctions against Russia’s ruler Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine war. Annalena Baerbock then gives an incendiary speech.
Munich/Brussels – By definition, an incendiary speech is a flaming and accusatory political speech that aims to eliminate grievances. In this respect, the sentences that Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) said after the meeting of EU foreign ministers on the Ukraine conflict * can be understood as such an incendiary speech. This Friday (February 25), the European Union (EU) passed economic sanctions against Russia and Moscow that, according to Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, “have never been seen before in this package”.
Sanctions against Putin and Lavrov: Baerbock gives a flaming speech in the Ukraine war
The goal is clear: Vladimir Putin’s inner circle of power in and around the Kremlin is to be hit. As Baerbock explained after the meeting in the Belgian capital, the EU will impose “tough” sanctions on the Russian head of state and his foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.
For example, the EU imposed a sanctions package of “economic and financial sanctions, but also sanctions against those who are responsible for this dreadfulness of the people in Ukraine*,” said Baerbock and said in a harsh choice of words: “This will ruin Russia .”
The 41-year-old Foreign Minister continued: “We are hitting the Putin system where it needs to be hit: not just economically and financially, but at its core of power. That’s why we’re not just listing oligarchs, that’s why we’ve already listed not only numerous MPs, but we’re now also listing the President of the Republic, Mr Putin, and the Foreign Minister, Mr Lavrov.”

Both are responsible “for the fact that innocent people die in Ukraine, they are responsible for the international system being trampled on,” Baerbock said in a clear speech to the media. Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine early on Thursday morning (February 24) without warning.
Meanwhile, Russian forces are said to have advanced to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, where former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko is helping organize the defense. The transatlantic defense alliance NATO around the USA and the German Bundeswehr had already declared that they would not intervene militarily in the Ukraine war because the country is not a member.
